Shampoo: Why your Stylist knows best!

18th April 2024
Shampoo. There must be a million brands out there, all promising variants of the same thing, to make your hair look shiny/healthy/hydrated… so which one should you choose? Which one is right for your hair? Which one can you trust?

We find that many products are great at making it look like they are going to solve all your problems, however the end result often leaves a lot to be desired. Even if you try and look past the brands, and look into key ingredients to look out for… you are met with long, confusing lists and find yourself even more overwhelmed!

This is particularly the case with mass market brands. From our experience, some products do what they promise to start with, but your hair suffers in the long run. Ever had that experience, where you find a shampoo that seems to work but slowly it gets dry, damaged and brittle? This can often be to do with ingredients that give short-term shine but long term damage by coating your hair with all sorts of yuck.

It’s a bit like fast-fashion. It might all seem great at first but when that dress you fell in love with is ruined after 2 washes… it all comes crashing down a bit! And not to mention the environmental and economical impact of having to buy a new one way more often.

Back to that confusing ingredients list… recently people are more switched on to the sorts of chemicals they should be looking for on the back of a bottle and what’s going to be good for your hair, and we think that’s great. The problem with those lists though is you can’t see the quantities. You might see the same key ingredients but in a mass-produced product, there will likely be a tiny amount of the good stuff, often diluted with water. This means you end up using twice or even three times the amount you would of a good, concentrated formula.

At the end of the day, they’re all going to do one thing for sure - wash your hair. Whether they cost £5 or £20, we can be sure of that. However, what else might they do? Or not do? The truth is, it’s hard to tell because everyone’s hair is different. It’s a minefield out there and therefore very easy to pick something that’ll end up damaging your hair in the long run, (even if it works for someone else) because it’s not tailored to you!

Personally, a journey into a shop to look for a new shampoo is so overwhelming, with so many different marketing strategies all screaming at you, not sure which is right or which is going to ruin my hair, I leave wishing there was someone who could just tell me what to buy and what will work for me.

Oh wait… there is! That’s where salons come in. We’re not just here for style, we are bursting with shampoo knowledge and training - so use us!

From the second you sit in that chair your stylist is working out what products are best for your hair. But this isn’t just limited to your time in the salon -  they are the perfect person to recommend a shampoo that works best for your hair type, condition and desired style.

You might even have a trusty shampoo that you’ve used for years, but it’s not giving you that oomph anymore! Hair can change, and it’s normal to change shampoos around. If a shampoo is doing its job, for example - an anti breakage shampoo, well, then you shouldn’t be using it forever. Once that breakage is combatted it may be time to move onto something more nourishing, getting your hair looking all the more gorgeous. We can always give you the most up to date recommendations for your hair and what is going to work for you.

On top of all of that, this way you know where the product has come from, and where your money’s going. Sustainable brands like Davines (a certified B Corp, meaning they’re meeting high standards of verified performance, accountability, and transparency) can’t be found on the high street, but the perfect products for you can be recommended to you in-salon!

So, next time you're feeling overwhelmed in the shampoo aisle, remember, your stylist is not just a hair expert, but also your trusted guide to finding the perfect product for your hair's needs.
