13th September 2021
With the summer months coming to an end and the autumn season fast approaching, you may start to notice an increase in hair shedding. This is known as seasonal hair shedding, this is nothing to panic about, it is simply part your hair growth cycle.

Not all your hair is continually growing at the same time, instead it goes through what is known as the growth cycle. These stages include, growing, transition and rest, before they’re released from the hair follicle and shed, the process is then repeated.

The growing stage is when the cells in the roots of your hair are dividing the quickest, so more hair is being formed, growing an average of half an inch a month.

The hair then goes through a short, 10-day transitional stage which signals the end of active hair growth and cuts individual hair off from their blood supply.

The third stage is the resting period where your hair remains in their follicles but aren’t actively growing, around 10 – 15% of your hair is in this stage at any one time.

The final stage of the hair growth cycle is shedding, this is when your hair is released from their follicles and fall out. The average person sheds, on average between 80 – 100 hairs every day, this is considered normal and a sign of a healthy scalp and healthy hair.

During certain times of the year, you may notice increased shedding, especially in the late September, October months, known as seasonal hair loss.

If you are concerned about the about of hair you are shedding, please talk to your hair professional who will be able to advise on the correct course of action, whether it be a line of products to care for your hair at home of whether a doctors advice is needed.
